Reimagining Reporting in the Climate Ecosystem

We are a coalition of climate funders committed to building a funding ecosystem grounded in shared learning. Our goal is streamlined reporting systems which improve transparency, reduce burden, increase efficiency, and enhance our collective ability to create lasting impact.

Guiding Principles

The Guiding Principles for Climate Philanthropy are a co-created set of working norms and practices for funders and regranters that can be used as a tool to guide respectful, efficient, useful information exchange.

RRI’s Key Approaches

Shared Reporting

A shared reporting model, where a regranter or funder collaborative submits a single written report to all (or at least most) of its funders rather than distinct reports and metrics for each funder.

Collective Learning Conversations

A collective learning model that refocuses reporting away from written narratives and instead toward strategic reflection conversations between funders and regranters/grantees that incorporate data and evidence.

RRI began with a shared realization across climate philanthropy: our reporting systems were not helping us achieve the impact we needed.

As climate philanthropy grew, it inherited reporting practices designed for oversight rather than learning. Grantees devoted considerable effort to reporting, but funders gained little actionable insight from the results. At the same time, the climate crisis was accelerating, demanding that we learn faster and work more effectively.

Across conversations, we heard many perspectives—but also one clear point of agreement: real learning is essential for real impact.

So we asked ourselves: What if reporting became a tool for learning instead of a burden?

That question launched RRI in 2022. Since then, we’ve been at the forefront of developing approaches to reporting that reduce administrative load and improve shared understanding. Our goal isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, but a set of principles and practices that help the climate philanthropy community act with greater clarity, coordination, and speed.

Together, we are reimagining reporting—so that every report strengthens our ability to learn, adapt, and drive meaningful climate impact.
